Is It Time to Get New Hearing Aids?

We update our technology all the time. When we need a new smartphone, laptop or tablet we go out and buy the latest, fastest model.

While we might not view our hearing aids the same way as we do our smartphones, the truth is they have a lot in common. They both continue to evolve in terms of technology, new features and what they are capable of, and they are also both used almost all day every day.

These factors also give both smartphones and hearing aids a finite lifespan.

How Long Will Your Hearing Aid Last?

When properly cared for, the average lifespan for hearing aids is about five years. After this time, they start to wear out and not function as well as they did before. However, there are some steps you can take to get the most out of your hearing aids.

Keep Hearing Aids Clean to Last Longer

Hearing aids attract dirt, moisture and earwax buildup which can cause problems with the electronic components in your hearing aids. Wiping off your hearing aids at the end of the day goes a long way in keeping them clean and performing well. If your hearing aid has a wax guard, be sure to change that out regularly, too.

Store your hearing aids in a cool, dry place at night. A drying box or dehumidifier might be a worthwhile investment to help rid your device of moisture buildup, especially on wet or humid days.

Check Your Batteries

If the sound from your hearing aids is weak or nonexistent, the first thing to check is the battery.

  1. Make sure the battery is inserted correctly

  2. Replace any weak or dead battery immediately

  3. Open the battery compartment and clean the contacts with a dry cloth

If your hearing aids still seem to be malfunctioning, or just not giving you the same level of help they once did it is probably time to see your hearing specialist.

Advancements in Technology

Getting new hearing aids doesn’t have to be a chore. It can be an exciting investment in your health! As mentioned, hearing aid technology is constantly improving and offering more features to make users’ lives easier.

Some of the newest hearing aid technology offers advancements in areas such as:

  1. Improved artificial intelligence

  2. Smart earbuds

  3. Mask mode features that help people with hearing aids understand people wearing masks. (Particularly helpful during COVID.)

While new technology can feel daunting, your audiologist can help walk you through your options as well as answer any questions you have about your new device. Hearing aids offer the most value when they are customized to best fit your needs. Just like technology, those needs can evolve.
